Ski lovers are already familiar with the Kronplatz ski resort, which is renowned as one of the best-maintained ski slopes in the Dolomites. It is one of the most modern ski resorts in Italy and impresses with its many high-speed cable cars and wide ski pistes. This year, the new 8-seater Plateau lift was built. The ski season in Kronplatz usually starts at the end of November and then lasts until mid-April.

What makes ski resort Kronplatz special compared to other ski resorts in the Dolomites is that most of the slopes are on one hill at an altitude of between 950 and 2,275 metres, and then accessed by a number of cable cars from four sides, from Olang, Perca, Brunico and San Vigilio.

In total, Kronplatz has 31 modern ski lifts and 121 kilometres of ski pistes, more than half of which are blue, which means they are wide and just steep enough for comfortable carving. These slopes are also the most suitable for children.

And the best skiers can't wait to carve their turns on one of the black runs in the morning: Sylvester, Hernegg, Piculin, Sorega, Pre da Peres, Hintna Riese and Erta, where the women's World Cup race is held every year at the end of January. This winter, the race will take place on Tuesday 21 January 2025.

How to get to the Kronplatz ski area

The best way to get to Kronplatz from central Austria is along the main road from the direction of Lienz, then just straight on to Brunico or the accommodation of your choice. The road is normal traffic and there are no passes.

From the direction of Tyrol or Germany, the best way is to take the motorway via the Brenner motoway and the exit for Brunico.

From the direction of Slovenia and Croatia, the best route is through the Karavanke tunnel and on to Spittal, Lienz and Brunico. The other option, which is more panoramic, is then via Trieste or Gorizia to Tolmezzo and on to Ovaro, Sappada and Sexten, where you join the main road to Brunico.

There is a third route option, again for skiers from the Venice area, which follows the motorway to Belluno, where you then continue along the main road to Cortina d'Ampezzo and on to Brunico.

Maybe just a tip to save you a few euros - drive within the limits in Italian places, because they have a lot of fixed speed cameras, and they like to send the fines to your home, even years after the offence.

Kronplatz - one of the most modern ski resorts in South Tyrol

The best time to visit Kronplatz is during the opening season in the first three weeks of December, when pre-season ski pass prices and accommodation prices are also lower.

Of course, the special charm of visiting the ski resort is during the Christmas-New Year holidays or then during the holidays in February, when the days are already a bit longer and the weather is often sunny.

Kronplatz ski pass prices

Ski pass prices in the Dolomites are up again this year by €3 for a day pass. If you are only going to ski at Kronplatz, then there is no point in buying tickets for the Dolomiti Superski, because those tickets are a few euros more expensive, e.g. a day ticket for adults from €75 to €83.

Kronplatz has two different ski pass price terms:

> low ski season until 21.12. & 7.1. - 1.2. and from 16.3. : ski passes for adults € 70, for seniors € 63, € 35 for children and € 49 for older children.

New features on the Kronplatz ski resort

Kronplatz is famous for its many cable cars. Out of a total of 31 ski lifts, there are 22 cable cars. This will delight those who don't mind unstrapping their skis at the end of the slope and then enjoying the warmth while the cable car takes you quickly to the top of the piste.

From all sides of the slopes, you'll be at the top of the piste in just a few minutes, where you can then decide which side of the sky to ski.

Two years ago, the new black ski slope Sorega was built, which is 1,450 m long and has a 435 m vertical drop, so it's suitable for the best skiers.

In the 2024/2025 season, the old 4-seater at the top of the piste (on the east side) was replaced by the new 8-seater Plateau. It is a modern and comfortable chairlift with leather heated seats and protective covers. It covers the 1,192 m length and 248 m height difference in 4.5 minutes.

In the morning, we recommend skiing on the Kronplatz south towards San Vigillo, also called Sonne (Sun), so you won't get cold. The lower part of the slopes - next to the Miara cable car - is very suitable for beginners, as the slope is very wide and sloping.

A must-see is the state-of-the-art 10-seater Olang 1+2 cable car (intermediate station - they can be connected or one part can be disconnected and you have to transfer, e.g. if it's windy at the top of the piste), which takes you from the valley to the top of Kronplatz in just 11.5 minutes and covers the 1,111 metres of vertical drop in just 11.5 minutes. It is a true architectural masterpiece and the wave-shaped roof structure of the upper station is particularly striking. The seats in the cable car are heated, of course, and all that's missing is the coffee service and the TV coverage of the Olympic Games ;). From the top, you'll enjoy 6 kilometres of wide slopes all the way down to the valley.

The longest ski run is the part where the Ried and Gipfelbahn cable cars take you from Percha (direct access from the train that goes down the valley directly to the cable car) to the top of the ski slope, and then you descend into the valley on a 9 km long run that also includes some flat parts.

Kronplatz offers lots of snow fun

The Kronplatz ski resort has plenty of children's games, skiing polygons with automatically timed slopes, a track where the top speed is measured, etc. Most of them can be found under the Alpen cable car.

If your child also likes ski jumping, going on twisty slopes or just trying out the biggest jumps, then you should visit the snow fun park near the Belvedere cable car, which is really top-notch.

Restaurant facilities at the ski resort

Kronplatz is at the crossroads of Italian and Austrian cuisine, so you'll have to decide every day whether pizza, spaghetti, Wiener steak or germknödl and schmorn are on the menu.

There are many tavernas along the ski slopes and then in the valley itself, where you can also choose from many local delicacies such as Schlutzkrapfen, which are a kind of ravioli stuffed with potato filling and bacon.

A rooster, a peace bell and two museums on a ski slope

The hallmark of the Kronplatz ski resort is the rooster, locally known as Giggo, which you'll see on everything from restaurant napkins to snow sculptures.

At the very top of the ski slope, you will also see the large peace bell - Concordia 2000, which rings every day at 12 noon. The bell weighs 18.1 tonnes and bears the Latin inscription "Donet deus populis pacem", which means "God grant peace to men". The platform also features a panoramic relief showing the surrounding mountains and major European cities.

If you have time, you can also visit the MMM - Messner Mountaineering Museum at the top of the ski slope, which is dedicated to Reinhold Messner's climbing achievements and the development of mountaineering from the beginning to the present day. Just 200 metres away, you can also visit the Lumen Museum, which is dedicated to mountain photography.
