As of January 1, 2026, the Škofije–Koper–Izola expressway has been reclassified as a main road, which means that a vignette is no longer required. However, tolls remain unchanged for vehicles with a maximum gross weight exceeding 3.5 tons, which also includes heavy motorhomes.

No vignette required on the main road between Škofije, Koper, and Izola
The Škofije–Koper–Izola expressway is now classified as a main road or a four-lane coastal road. With the change in the road classification, the maximum speed limit on this road has also changed, and is now only 90 km/h instead of 110 km/h, while in the Markovec tunnel the speed limit is reduced to 80 km/h.
However, as a vignette is not required to drive on main roads, it is also not needed for passenger vehicles on this section of road from the beginning of 2026.
This was welcomed especially by all local residents, who often used local detour roads to access nearby Italy, as well as tourists who entered Slovenia at Škofije and then had to buy a vignette for this short section of the expressway.
This is no longer necessary, but it should be noted that this change is only temporary, according to DARS, and will only apply until the motorway between Koper and Dragonja is completed.
Toll collection for heavy vehicles remains
We checked with DARS how toll collection works for vehicles with a maximum gross weight of over 3.5 tons that use the DarsGO electronic card to pay tolls in Slovenia.
For all these vehicles, which also includes motorhomes over 3.5 tons, the toll remains unchanged and the use of the DarsGo card is still mandatory.
Below is a map of the road section where the vignette is no longer needed, but the DarsGO toll card is still required for heavy vehicles.
