We have been alerting campers through our social media and online that storms are coming at the end of the weekend. Storms were accompanied with strong wing that has damaged several pine trees. It seems that recently newly opened campsite Falkensteiner in Zadar was damaged the most.

First storms with hail has reached around 3 PM coastline with Opatiija and Rijeka, while even stronger storm with wind reached Istria between Novigrad and Fazana.

This all have moved to islands Cres, Krk, Rab and Pag, while the second part of the storm came a bit later to Losinj and Zadar. Some storms were as well from Sibenik to Split, but were much weaker already. The storms were accompanied with strong wind that is especially dangerous in campsites as it comes suddenly and can be fatal for many trees.

We have received several photographs from newly renovated camping Falkensteiner in Zadar, that has opened its doors only on July 1st. We have visited this camp few days ago and left it yesterday. We are astonished by the photos and changes from yesterday to today, made by strong wind. Our photos can be found at the camping Falkensteiner description, but we are sad to see that it has changed a lot.

Camping guests that were in the camp during the night say that it was really scary. Strong wind, faster than 110 km/h has started to blow a bit after 10 PM and has been carrying around everything that was not attached and fixed. Parasols and sunbeds from the beach were blown to the camping pitches and into the swimming pool, wind has damaged many pavalions and awnings. More than 30 pine trees were cut and fell on campers, tents, caravans and new mobile homes.

Luckily no one got hurt as all the guests have removed themselves safely to the sanitary building. Only morning has shown how high the damage was. Camping pitch that we have used for couple of days during our stay is completely covered with branches and trees and we are really lucky that we have left only few hours before the storm.

We advise all campers to turn to the camp's reception in case of storms and consequent damages. They might have the insurance for natural damages. For sure campsite has the liability insurance, but in case of storms we'd say that the insurance for cases of natural damages would be more appropriate. It is good to make some photos of the damage and start solving the insurance issues on the spot - with camp's reception and local insurance company if needed.

Unfortunately, we need to write that the period with strong storms is not over yet. We expect some storms my the sea on Monday afternoon and evening and currently forecast anticipates that the strongest ones will come over Slovenia and Croatia on Tuesday evening and night to Wednesday - it will start on the northern part of the Adriatic. Strong bora wind is expected. More about the weather forecast that is regularly updated can be found at (in Slovene and with links to international webpages) here - weather forecast for campers.
