Excursions in Goriska Brda
We recommend a hike to Sabotin, from where you can enojoy a beautiful view of the entire region. You can visit the Peace Park and the World War I Museum. Boundary stones and abandoned bunkers eloquently testify to the former border between Italy and the former Yugoslavia.
In Brda, they have many well-kept hiking Cherry Trails, named after old varieties of cherries. Thus, they have 8 circular footpaths: Cmpevka, Crnica, Drugmbernca, Kozanka, PrvaCnca, Bjla cpika, Trcinka, Karnjevka and also Gradnikova ucna.
19. and 20. stage of Juliana trail are going through Goriska Brda.
There is an interesting ossuary in Oslavje (I), which can be reached on foot or by bike. It was built in 1938 on Monte Calvario, the last resting place of World War I soldiers who fell in the area of Tolmin and Gorizia. You can also see the idyllic Gothic Church of the Holy Cross, which stands on a hill above the village of Kojsko and was built during the Turkish invasions in the 16th century. On the way to the church there are many small chapels of the Stations of the Cross, and in the church you can see the largest and almost completely preserved Gothic wing altar in Slovenia from 1515. The carvings on the altar represent motifs of Christ's suffering and crucifixion.
There is a 23m high lookout tower on the Mejnik hill in Gonjace and from the top you will have a beautiful view of Goriška Brda, Friuli, the Gulf of Trieste, the Karst and the Vipava Valley. Next to the lookout tower is a monument to the victims of World War II on the right bank of the Soca River. The path will lead you on to the medieval village of Smartno, one of the most beautiful villages in the center of Goriska Brda, which has been declared a cultural monument due to its exceptional architectural heritage. It was built on the remains of a Roman base and is first mentioned in 1317, and the city wall with towers was built to defend against Turkish invasions. The old medieval houses are clustered around the baroque church of St. Martin, which is the largest parish church in Brda. Among the narrow streets of Smartno is the Brdanska hisa, which is a small museum.
The center of Goriska Brda and at the same time the seat of the municipality is the village Dobrovo, which was named after a variety of oak called dob, which was once the most widespread tree in Brda. Here you will be able to see Dobrovo Castle. A Renaissance two-storey mansion from the early 17th century was built on the site of an older castle. Inside the castle, more precisely on the staircase and in most of the rooms, fragments of frescoes with coats of arms and landscape have been preserved. The castle was finally renovated in 1991. On the first floor is the Knight's Hall, where musical and other events take place. Dobrovo Castle also houses a permanent art collection of prints by the artist Zoran Music and part of the collection of Count Baguer, the last owner of the castle. In the castle cellar there is a hunting room, a restaurant and a wine cellar of Brda winemakers.
The Brda Winery Cellar, situated in Dobrovo at the heart of Brda, is the leading producer and exporter of Slovenian bottled wine, renowned for its distinctive style and appreciated by wine lovers in Slovenia and 26 countries around the world. The winery unites 400 families, who have been working together for over fifty years and have turned local wine making into a success story. They produce some of the most renowned wine brands in Slovenia, namely Quercus, Bagueri and Krasno. For visitors they offer self wine-tasting and quidded tours of the cellar with tutored tastings of their wines.
Villa Vipolze, a former hunting lodge of the counts of Gorizia, later owned by various noble families, is definitely wonderful to see. The Venetians rearranged it in the 17th century a renaissance villa and suffered much damage between the two wars. In 2015 it was completely renovated. In the lobby of the villa there is a museum showing the story of the manor, a shop with Brda products, Gradnik's room and a café with an outdoor terrace. On the first floor, called Piano Nobile, there are many halls for various activities. The villa is also a great location for a wedding. The ceremony usually begins in the Venetian rooms or in the villa park, then the celebration continues in front of the villa and then ends with an unforgettable celebration in the basement or on the platform in front of the basement.
For lovers of natural beauty, we recommend a trip and visit to the Krcnik gorge and the Kotlina pools, which are located below the village of Kozbana, where the Kozbanjscek stream carved picturesque pools and the beautiful Krcnik natural bridge into limestone.
The abandoned village of Slapnik, which was once the richest village in Brda, has also been interesting for 40 years. After the Second World War, the emigration of residents to larger cities began. Years ago, they wanted to renovate the village while filming a reality show, but due to ownership problems, that didn’t happen.
