Before the last weekend we have been publishing alerts for possible strong wind that has unfortunately been realized. In camping Omisalj on island Krk some campers and caravans were rolled over.

In last seasons we have been witnessing extreme weather conditions. If we are complaining about hot days in summer that are often joined by strong storms, spring and autumn are well known for strong winds.

Wind is especially dangerous for campsites that are located on open spaces. Trees that are usually welcome for providing needed shade in summer, with wind turn into dangerous falling objects - be it their branches or complete trees.

Bora wind pushes up to 197 km/h

For the beginning of this week (13th and 14th of May) strong wind was anticipated for Kvarner and North Dalmatia region (around Velebit mountains). Forecast foresaw strong wind with pushes up to 150 km/h. Strong wind started during the night from Sunday to Monday and caused several problems in centre of capital - Zagreb.

Strong pushes hit the seaside on Tuesday morning. On the bridge to island Pag the measuring devices registered pushes from 180 to 197 km/h, while on island Krk between 130 - 150 km/h.

Renovated campsite Omisalj on island Krk has pitches located in kind of funnel that is ideal for wind that is blowing from the hills towards the seas. They have warned their guests about the potential threat and that the vehicles should be park with nose turned towards the wind.

Unfortunately, not everyone followed their advice and some vehicles in the first row by the sea were overturned. You can see on the photo how strong the wind was - it overturned caravan that is heavier than 5 tons.

Some damage was noticed as well in camping Ostro in Kraljevica, but that was limited to the canopies and camping kitchens.

What to do in case of strong wing in campsite

If weather forecast is talking about strong wing in region Kvarner (mainland and eastern side of islands Krk, Rab and Pag) and under Velebit mountains (towns Senj, Paklenica and Razanac) you should pay additional attention to your safety.

First is surely correct parking of the vehicle (as mentioned above), you should not forget add stronger connecting stripes that fix camper or caravan into the grounds. That is essential for all parked in the first rows by the sea. You should as well take care of all foldable and movable camping equipment, that will not only get destroyed, but might become hazardous flying objects.

Camping lovers that are in campsite with tent, should in the case of similar weather forecast pack on time and search for better weather.

If you get caught by the storm, we advice you to move to firm buildings - this are most likely sanitary facilities. In this circumstances, do not save camping equipment, but yourself.
